Andy Duke of BUCK BROTHERS
The BUCK BROTHERS Interview
H2YOU: Andy thanks for taking the time to talk to us at HOLLYWOOD2YOU.TV. We really like your new music video " WHICH ME DO YOU LIKE". I think it's a great song, and you captured a really fun & interesting feel with the choice of shots & edits. Was the group involved with the concept for that video, and who directed it?
Andy: "Which me do you like?" was one of the very first songs that Buck Brothers recorded and, after doing some initial promo for it, we were approached by a young British director named Matthew Chadwick. Before he provided the band with the proposed treatment for the video, Matthew coyly asked if we were prepared to do "something subversive". The three of us indicated that we were incredibly open to fresh ideas and we quickly found out that Chadwick wanted to make a debut video in which the identity of the band's lead singer remains a mystery from beginning to end. Not a traditional approach for a band's first video to say the very least. This idea, along with Thomas Rambo's (of Atlanta, GA) amazing editing, has resulted in something that Buck Brothers are very proud of. And it's been an international collaboration with filming happening in London and final editing taking place in the USA. The band have received verbal confirmation that "Which me do you like?" will be shown on MTV and MTV2 in the USA next month (July) which we're incredibly excited about.
H2YOU: For the lineup it's you playing bass, and you've got Dom Beckford on Guitar, and Craig Welsh on Drums. How long have you guys been playing together now, and are the three of you the original BUCK BROTHERS members?
Andy: Although there have been different incarnations of the band since we formed nearly 3 years ago, this is truly the ultimate Buck Brothers lineup and the three of us gel together better than hairspray on the back-combed locks of a hair-metal fan. Although this lineup has been going strong for a year now, I've had the pleasure of knowing both Dom and Craig much longer than that. They're both from Jersey. Not NEW Jersey in the USA but OLD Jersey in the Channel Islands (located in between France and England). I'd met both Dom and Craig at the shows that earlier versions of Buck Brothers did in the Channel Islands and we became really good friends straight away. The dynamic duo had both seen Buck Brothers many times in both Jersey and England and became fans of the band. And it goes without saying that this has really helped to shape the feel and sound of what we're doing today. Both Dom and Craig had played in a really good Jersey band called Roarfield and had already developed a great chemistry together through that band.
H2YOU: Andy, you guys rock with intensity and humor at the same time. How would YOU describe the BUCK BROTHERS sound and musical direction? Andy: The question really answers itself - we rock with intensity and humor at the same time. (Laughs)
Although we don't take ourselves very seriously, we do take what we do very seriously. And this attitude has really shaped the feel and sound of the band. With song titles like 'Gorgeously Stupid' and 'Girls, Skirts, Boots, Bikes' - it's clear that Buck Brothers are quite a playful bunch and that intense analysis of lyrical content shouldn't be on the agenda. And this "fun factor" is sadly quite absent in the music world. And it has been for a very long time. Ultimately we're putting the fun back into rock and having a lot of fun while doing it.
H2YOU: You're New CD "ME" sounds great. I see you're using multiple indie labels releasing it around the world, is that to your advantage or would you prefer a Major label to handle it all?
Andy: My bank manager would certainly prefer Buck Brothers to be with a major label. (Laughs) Being able to oversee all of our releases directly, however, has been very important to the band. Rather than doing this for 'indie kudos', our multi-label approach has been a necessity for Buck Brothers and has enabled us to be hands-on in every territory where our CD has been released. The downside to this is increased admin for the band. In addition to being musicians, the three of us also have to don business hats on a regular basis. Would we prefer to have a Major label handle it all? With the music industry in a state of flux, I no longer think that major labels are contenders any more. But don't tell my bank manager that.
H2YOU: I know you just finished a tour in the USA. What city did you ROCK the most, and what was your overall feeling about the US tour.
Andy: Our first US tour was amazing and extreme in equal measure. From packed houses in Detroit to strutting our stuff in front of two drunkards and deaf albino dog in Tulsa - we certainly experienced every type of live setting that you can imagine on our coast-to-coast trek. But, regardless of the numbers of people in front of us when we're onstage - we always "rock the house" as the Americans say. Every city we played at had its own charm and, on this outing, Detroit and New Jersey were particular highlights. Violent cities and Buck Brothers appear to be a classic combination. I suppose the fear of "swimming with the fishes" inspires us to perform well. (Laughs)

H2YOU: I see you like feathered Boas on stage.... were any animals harmed in the making of your fashion statement?? Serious now, you've got some flash and glam are you having fun or what??
Andy: The band have no comment regarding Big Bird's recent disappearance from Seasame Street. (laughs) The feather boas, whether sourced from a lovable character from a children's television show or otherwise, are indeed about the fun factor. Fluffy fun in fact. There are venues all over the world which still have the remnants of our boas lurking about on their stages. Some bands leave stickers all over the loos of the dives that we play at. We, on the other hand, leave a legacy of pink, white and green feathers. We initially used the boas to add some well needed colour to the dark and dingy stages that we've been jumping on since day one and it's become a trademark.
H2YOU: You've got a fresh Pop sound and I hear several great influences when I listen. What Artists do you think about when you're creating your unique BUCK BROTHERS sound?
Andy: It's all about Tin Machine. Everything we do is owed to Tin Machine. Hunt Sales, Tony Sales, Reeves Gabreles and the other guy. (Laughs)
The three of us really listen to everything. And everything we listen to, whether subconsciously or otherwise, comes out in what we play. We certainly like a good tune regardless of genre. Rather than corner ourselves into one specific music type - we simply like whatever it is that pumps our 'nads.....musically speaking. Be it written by Joe Strummer and Mick Jones or Max Martin (tunesmith for Britney Spears early hits). A great song is a great song regardless of production values or the artist/band performing it.
H2YOU: I know you released "THE WORLD according to BUCK" in 2006, but you consider the latest "ME" CD to be your debut. So do you consider the 2006 release as just a demo EP?
Andy: 'The World According to Buck' was indeed a release of 'demo' mixes of some of the tracks that eventually made it onto our debut album. To be honest, it was really just a 'promo only' offering to test the waters for the band in the US. This limited run of CDs are so rare that we don't even own a copy of the EP. Only 400 were produced and those all went out to radio. If anyone has a copy, please send it to us.
H2YOU: Where have you found your Music is the most well received around the world? In the States maybe or the UK?
Andy: North America has certainly embraced Buck Brothers the most and we feel very much at home there. And for all our fans in North America reading this - thanks for your support.
H2YOU: What's up next for Studio Recording for BUCK BROTHERS?
Andy: This is a timely question as we only just did a track listing for the next album last night. Recording commences in early July and will take place at the studio of 1970s legend Gilbert O'Sullivan in Jersey (he wrote the big hit 'Alone Again (Naturally)'. Co-production will once again take place between Phil E. Warren and the band which is the same set up we had for "Me".
H2YOU: Do you have any plans to change or expand your musical direction in upcoming recordings? I mean is there anything special or different that you'd like to try?
Andy: We'd really like to capture the live might of the band this time round and having access to Gilbert O'Sullivan's state of the art facilities will help to achieve this. Whereas "Me" was a very dry and "near sound" album production-wise - we're going to experiment a bit more with a bigger but not "over produced" sound. Particularly with the drums. When recording "Me", we wanted to achieve a dynamic that was very much in keeping with "Entertainment" era Gang of Four. This involved lobbing tea towels on toms, which was always exciting to remind ourselves of during tea breaks, and damping kick (bass) drums as much as possible. We also used vintage amps that were virtually on the verge of collapse on that album but this time around, everything will be in full working order. But, knowing the three of us, still played bloody loud. (laughs)
The sensibility and fun factor of the band will definitely remain the same with our next release. It'll just be a little bigger. It will as though the Feather Boas are right in front of you as you hear the new tracks.
H2YOU: When and Where are your next tour dates coming up?
Andy: We're in the middle of hatching another US Tour which will hopefully take place in September/October. And there are some US national television appearances that are in the pipeline too but I can't discuss these for fear of castration by our legal reps. Mind you, I'll probably get in legal trouble because of using the word castration. You see - now you've got me into trouble. And all via an innocent question like that. (Laughs) Tour dates will be up on our website(s) as soon as they're booked so watch this space. We have so much exciting stuff happening that's up in the air that yours truly can barely sleep these days. I may look panda eyed because of this new found insomnia but I am decidedly happy.
H2YOU: Is there anything I missed and that you'd like to tell our viewers about the BUCK BROTHERS?
Andy: My second toes are both longer than my big toes.
H2YOU: Oh, sorry to hear about the feet Andy.. anyway, Thanks again for your time and we wish the BUCK BROTHERS all the best with the new recordings and music videos. Please stop by our studios again the next time you're in Hollywood and give us all the updates!
